Dates, the desert's gift to humanity

Dates have been a staple food in the Middle East for thousands of years.  No processing required, they are natures sweet little miracle.  With a low GI (around 30-35), they are packed with sugar in a way that doesn’t send you crazy hungry.  They are also high in potassium and from experience, seem to be good at unblocking blocked pipes.

I (Julius) use them in ultra marathons instead of eating the highly processed junk food on offer.  They are easy to carry and they release sugar slowly into the blood stream, so I get a good hour of continuous exercise out of a couple of dates.
